Home Paying for College Scholarships

Lamar University is dedicated to helping students achieve their educational goals, and scholarships are one valuable tool to do that. Each year, LU awards more than 1,000 scholarships providing more than $3 million in assistance to students. These scholarships are made possible by generous donations from alumni and friends. Most scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement. Other factors such as academic major, leadership ability and specialized skills (athletics, marching band, art, music, etc.) also may be considered in awarding scholarships. For priority consideration for Lamar University scholarships, apply no later than February 1 each year.

Mirabeau Scholars Program

Outstanding incoming freshmen with exceptionally strong academic records are invited to apply for LU’s Mirabeau Scholars program. Mirabeau Scholars receive a full scholarship for four years covering tuition, fees, room and board, and books. Applicants should be first-time-in-college freshmen (dual credit and AP credit are not disqualifying) with a minimum SAT score of 1250 (math and critical reading) or an ACT score of 28 and a record of demonstrated excellence in academics, leadership, service and/or creative endeavors.

Mirabeau Scholars applicants should submit a letter of interest including a personal statement of academic goals and intended major, along with a current resume and three letters of recommendation, two of which must be from current teachers. Applicants also should include a copy of their Lamar University application for undergraduate admission, documentation of SAT or ACT scores, and a copy of their current high school transcript reflecting class rank. All application materials should be submitted no later than January 15 to:

General Scholarships

To apply for all general Lamar University scholarships and some scholarships in individual majors submit a scholarship application no later than February 1. The application may be completed online at Apply Texas or may be downloaded here (PDF) and mailed to:

Students who have chosen an academic major also should check with their colleges and academic departments to find out what other scholarships are available and how they can apply. Incoming engineering majors may be eligible for the Engineering Excellence Scholarship.

Additionally, LU offers scholarships through the Southeast Texas Legends Scholarship Program and through the LU Honors Program. The Southeast Texas Legends Scholarship application may be downloaded from this page. Incoming freshmen who apply for the Honors Program will automatically be considered for honors scholarships. Other Scholarships Opportunities

Many groups and organizations other than the university offer competitive scholarships as well. Incoming freshmen should check with their high school counselors for information on scholarship opportunities.
