Undergraduate students who have attended another college or university should apply to Lamar University as transfer students. Transfer students with fewer than 18 hours of college credit also must meet admission requirements for entering freshmen.

Applying

Transfer students should submit an online application through the statewide Apply Texas system. Students should also have official copies of all prior college and university transcripts send to Lamar University, regardless of the length of attendance and whether credit was earned. Those transferring fewer than 18 credit hours also should have SAT or ACT scores sent to Lamar University by the testing agency. Use SAT Code 6360 or ACT Code 4114. Submit all application materials no later than August 1 for fall and no later than January 2 for spring.

Admission Requirements

To qualify for transfer admission, students should have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale for all work attempted and be eligible to re-enter all colleges and universities previously attended.

Students who do not meet all transfer requirements may be considered for admission on an individual basis. These applicants must provide a one- to two- page written statement in which they account for past academic shortcomings, identify steps they will take to address those shortcomings, and specify the academic goals they plan to achieve while attending Lamar University. The statement must be signed to verify that the organization and content of the writing are the work of the applicant.

Students also must include two letters of recommendation from people familiar with their academic background, such as teachers or employers, and may include other pertinent information for consideration such as participation in extra-curricular activities or specialized skills. Transfer Credits

Lamar University has articulation agreements with several institutions to ease the transfer process. Credit earned at other accredited institutions will be considered for Lamar University credit using these guidelines:

  1. All courses – whether passed, failed or repeated – are used to calculate the transfer grade point average, which is used to determine admission status.
  2. Grades of D are transferable, but departments may refuse to count them toward a degree.
  3. Transfers from a community (two-year) college are limited to 66 semester hours of transferrable credit. No community (two-year) college credits will be considered for upper-level (junior-senior) credits.
  4. Transfer students normally will be informed of the amount of transfer credit awarded within two weeks of acceptance. In some circumstances, evaluation may take longer, with credit being awarded no later than the end of the student’s first academic term at Lamar University. Lamar University also accepts all transfer credits meeting American Council on Education guidelines. Students should submit official ACE transcripts. The university grants non-equivalent credit; however, department chairs may grant equivalent credit toward degree requirements. Credit for military experience may be granted based on ACE evaluation recommendations. Students should submit Form DD214 or Form DD256.

After Applying

If additional information is needed to complete your application, such as transcripts, test scores or permanent residency cards, you will receive an e-mail letting you know what is needed to complete the application process. This e-mail will include your Lamar University identification number, which you can use to check your admission status online. 

Acceptance notices are e-mailed soon after all required application materials are received. These notices also include LU identification numbers as well as registration information and general instructions. Students who will enroll in the fall should plan to attend an orientation session in the summer. 

At orientation, students will meet with an academic advisor, register for fall classes and receive their LU ID and MyLamar account, which provides access to numerous online resources. Academic advisement is required for all new transfer students and for returning students in most majors.

Orientation provides an opportunity to meet other new students and learn about campus life. A few days before fall classes begin, new students have another opportunity to meet their fellow students through a variety of free activities on campus offered during Weekend of Welcome.

Before attending on-campus classes, students who are under age 30 must either receive a vaccination against bacterial meningitis or meet specific criteria for declining a vaccination. For more information on complying with this requirement pursuant to Texas Senate Bill 1107, click here.
